The mission of the FAA’s UAS Policy Team (AJV-P22) is to ensure integration of UAS new entrants into the NAS by developing appropriate airspace operations and Air Traffic Control (ATC) procedures to support these new operations.
Crown supports the UAS integration of new entrants into the NAS by providing seasoned en-route and terminal ATC subject matter expertise with UAS operations experience. Our team supports the following areas of work:
- Evaluation of new policy and rulemaking
- Safety Risk Management (SRM) evaluation, policy and procedures
- Facilitation and coordination of information regarding the integration of UAS in the NAS
- UAS technical, analytical, and business planning
- Evolution of UAS policy and procedures for integration of UAS in the NAS
- UAS support document and templates (websites and automation tools)
- Development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Research and review of international harmonization of standards.
- Processing and compliance of Freedom of Information (FOIA) requests pertaining to UAS integration into the NAS.
Development of new policy frequently requires conduct of an SRM panel, wherein ATC experts analyze the safety risks associated with the proposed operations, the mechanisms proposed to reduce those risks, and the evaluation of the residual risk. Either the SRM panel deems the operation safe, or additional mitigation methods and analysis are requested.
Benefit to the FAA: Since 2021, the Crown Team has evaluated over 100 UAS user requests; completed the development of 3 SRM evaluations resulting in policy and procedural changes; completed 3 UAS integration SOPs and responded to 2 FOIA requests.
