Crown provides Architecture and Systems Engineering support for the replacement Voice Communication System (VCS) on the Leidos Future Flight Services Program (FFSP). The purpose of the program is to provide flight services to (generally) general aviation pilots.
An FAA objective for this program was to substantially reduce the costs of providing these services over the life of the contract by modernizing the existing Leidos FS21 Flight Services infrastructure. The program provisions Flight Service stations manned by Flight Services Specialists and all of the required supporting infrastructure. Flight Service Specialists provide pre-flight (weather briefings, updates to flight plans, filing flight plans, review of NOTAMS) and in-flight services (pilot communications, emergency service, updates to flight plans). Most of the services that are provided require voice communications between the Flight Service Specialist and the pilot.
When the project is completed, the modernized infrastructure will allow Leidos tremendous staffing flexibility, providing assurance against disasters and allowing facilities to be staffed in line with normal working times for the region.
During the development phase of the program (2020 – 2021), Crown supported the voice switch development and qualification and network engineering for deployment of this new technology.
